Commemoration of the memory of Mykhailo Zhiznevskyi, the first Belarusian to die twelve years ago for the freedom of Ukraine and his homeland, Kyiv, January 26, 2026
According to data from Radio Liberty’s Belarusian service, several hundred volunteers from Belarus are currently taking part in the war on the side of Ukraine.
In Kyiv on the evening of January 26, a memorial march along the central streets took place in honor of Belarusians who died during the war for Ukraine as part of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The participants of the action also honored the memory of Mykhailo Zhiznevskyi, a hero of Belarus and Ukraine, who died on January 22, 2014 during the Revolution of Dignity.
According to a correspondent for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, the march occurred along the same route that has been used for 12 years – the same streets along which Zhiznevskyi was led to his final journey on his birthday.
The march began at Mykhailo’s Square and proceeded along the central Kyiv streets to Independence Square. Near the memorial decorated with pennants, the participants paid tribute to Mykhailo Zhiznevskyi and to all Belarusians who have fallen for Ukraine since 2014, naming each of them by name.
