Great to hear!

  1. Once people give up their company car, what’s stopping them from buying a car of their own with that extra money?

  2. Brugge does the same. You get a coupon of 500€ yiu can use to buy a bicycle, carsharing membership or spend on public transport. You promise to not buy a car or get a company car in the next three years

  3. So basically, you buy a car for let’s say 10k euro’s, ditch the car and you get 900 euro’s back. What about the other 9100 euro’s? Gone? In the trash?

  4. I’m going to be buying a horse with mine. Parking in Gent has given me a load of shit over the years and I think it’s time to repay the buggers… 😉

  5. If the government could just allow me to take a non taxable car budget of 700 euro monthly and keep in my pocket I wouldn’t need a car…. I think most people go for cars just because it’s a better deal tax wise.

  6. Make public transport viable and comfortable then.

Make it so I can take a bus 24/7, not “oh no theyre on strike again” or “but there’s no busses at 2-3am at night, who needs transport at night?” I do, okay?

And then there’s the comfort, ease and functionality. no matter how much you tax cars or make them expensive, of people can afford it, they’ll prefer a car.

It’s an all-in-1 tool, transportation for large purchases? Got ya. Travelling to a remote place in the ardennes for a weekend away? Got ya! No dirt, smell, noise or anything (unless you dont clean your car and are filthy).

I would honestly like to take public transport more often (if it was higher quality.. and worked at night etc..)

Last time I took the train to Antwerp city during the afternoon from brussels to hang out with people, I thought “going by car will suck, then I can’t drink anything, and parking is probably impossible to find and traffic jams etc..”

God did I regret it.. the delays alone were longer than I wouldve spent in traffic. I spent 14euros on a 2way ticket, that’s more than gasoline wouldve costed me, even at current prices, imagine if I drove an electric car (and I’m planning to buy one within a year or two)

And then the worst, my last train back was right before midnight, so I couldnt even stay to hang out late and had to leave early.. and on the way back the train had loud annoying people on it, screaming all the time about god knows what (foreign language)

Suffice to say, I’m not doing that again. Ever. I rather stay sober and be stuck in traffic on the way there than have to deal with that bs again.

No matter how much you try to glorify it, public transport (at least here in belgium) still sucks and no matter how much you tax cars or try to make them unaffordable, those will be able to afford one, will get one, they simply offer a superior experience

  7. The thing is if I am “obliged” by the gov to change my old car and buying another which needs to be used, no diesel, post 2015 in order to be able to keep it until 2028/30, I still need to spend more than 12.000/15.000 euros. AT LEAST. I don’t even want to think about buying a new one

It stings in the butt…the transition is hard, and in the worst possible timing considering fuel being so expensive now, electric cars being still unaffordable and infrastructures for them not ready to use.

(I already use public transportation but my so needs a car just to work outside bxl during the week, the train is not an option, renting would cost the same as owning. This is still a big hole in our budget. We were trying to buy a house/apartment/roof, but I guess it’s gonna be this or that for now….).

Edit: I am reading lots of comments of people thinking each individual could live as well without cars. Well, I don’t need one, I don’t even have my licence, I work a 9/5 in the center. But there are still jobs that require private transportation that can not be a scooter or a bike, fgs, and it’s just unfair to ask people to transition so fast when nothing is put in place to ease the process. I personnally am very bothered cause our short term future seems so ugly and painful already… or should I say again… that I am losing patience and hope. 🙁

  8. I’m not exactly for a ban of cars, but more public transport options, as well as better walking and cycling infrastructure is something I wholeheartedly support.
