Any 737 pilots on here that can answer a thing that’s been boggling my mind since my flight today

  1. Went if there’s a crash on land there are 8x exits but on water the back 2 can’t be used.

Was wondering if it had something to do with the engines but it can’t be cos the wing exits back onto the engines too.

It’s been doing my head in.

  2. Without any prior knowledge, I would presume the back of the plane is heavier and would sink deeper in a water landing, making those doors unsuitable for exit.

  3. Oh well. You’ve all given me a lot to think about. Thanks guys.

I always dread am emergency for obvious reasons and since the Hudson landing where they said people tramped over others to get to the door I tend to sit near exits

  4. Aeronatical engineer here… This essentially depends on the slides installed. For flying over water, airlines are required to carry life rafts. (Many carry separate ones inside) Depending on the passenger capacity and configuration of the cabin, there is a specified quantity of rafts which they are required to carry by regulation.

To save space and weight, Slide-Rafts are larger and more buoyant slides which have been developed with a dual purpose. They can inflate for a water landing and detach from the aircraft to act like a conventional raft.

Ryanair run a very basic configuration for their aircraft. So in all likelihood there are only slide-rafts fitted at the front doors. And because of the capacity & configuration the airline are covered per the regulation, but it means they have a difference like this.

As one other user mentioned it may actually be down to the balance as the aircraft is submerged during a ditching event. This would actually be specified somewhere in the aircraft type certification, as the maker would have to show how it reacts during a ditching. Not exactly sure here as there are many aircraft models which have slide rafts at rear doors.

Might actually look this up at work in the morning out of curiosity. 🤓

What have you learned from this? Aviation is extremely safety driven! Remember that you have more chance of being run over by a herd of stampeding donkeys than being in a plane crash. Safe flying ✈️
