Numerous crashes across Quinte region

The 401 between Belleville and Brighton is a no go Tuesday morning.

Multiple multi-vehicle collisions have been called in, with the first being just before 8:00 a.m..

The highway was near zero visibility in the area.

One crash in the eastbound lanes involved 17 vehicles, but miraculously no one was killed.

Multiple tractor trailers are said to be involved in multiple sites, with some passenger vehicles involved, and a cube van.

One of the big rigs also caught fire and was destroyed.

The City of Quinte West brought a bus to the highway to get people to a warming centre.

No vehicles are being allowed on the westbound lanes as far east as Shannonville Road, while eastbound traffic is not being allowed on at Glen Miller Road.

Police are now attempting to turn around vehicles to go in the opposite direction to get off the highway.

Those on the 401 are reminded to remain in their vehicles by Belleville Fire Chief Dan Smith.

Meantime, there have been numerous vehicles into the ditch and off the road, including a propane truck onto its side in Tyendinaga Township and a passenger vehicle into a hydro pole on Vermilyea Road, near Huntingwood Drive.

Another closure on the 401, this time at Odessa.

Ontario Provincial Police say Highway 401 westbound is fully closed at Lennox & Addington Rd 4 due to a collision involving two transport trucks. 

Police say there is no access to Hwy 401 westbound from Lennox & Addington Rd 4 or from the Napanee ONroute.

Motorists are asked to avoid travel if possible.
