The Australian government has reappointed Sue McCarrey as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority (NOPSEMA) for a further three years.
Minister for Resources and Northern Australia Madeleine King said McCarrey’s continued leadership will provide stability and expertise at a time of substantial change across Australia’s offshore energy sector.
“Ms McCarrey is a highly regarded national regulator whose steady leadership has reinforced NOPSEMA’s capability and credibility,” Minister King said.
“Her reappointment reflects her ability to navigate the complex challenges facing offshore industries and uphold the highest standards of safety, environmental management and transparency.”
McCarrey was first appointed CEO in February 2023, following senior roles including Chief Executive of Australia’s Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator.
Minister King said McCarrey will continue to lead NOPSEMA as it manages growing decommissioning activity and continues to regulate both offshore petroleum and the offshore electricity infrastructure sector.
Under Sue McCarrey’s leadership since 2023, NOPSEMA has advanced its digital transformation via Project CORE, a new platform streamlining regulatory interactions for greater efficiency.
She has also emphasised adaptive regulation to address psychosocial risks, First Nations engagement, and the shift toward offshore renewables alongside traditional petroleum activities.
