On January 21st this year, the State Security Service (VDD) prompted the prosecutor’s office to initiate criminal proceedings against a Latvian citizen for providing funding to the army of the aggressor state, Russia, for the purchase of military equipment.
The VDD did not disclose the name of the suspect, but unofficial information available to Latvian Television indicates that it is pro-Russian activist Poļina Kamļova from Rēzekne. She was detained at the beginning of December last year. She is currently being held in custody as a security measure.
The VDD investigation found that she responded to a request from a contact person in Russia to provide financial resources for the purchase of drone jamming equipment for Russian soldiers on the front lines in Ukraine.
Kamļova, using her acquaintance in Belarus as an intermediary, allegedly transferred funds to Russia, thereby providing support to the armed forces of the aggressor state.
The penalty for providing financial support outside the Republic of Latvia to a party involved in an armed conflict whose actions are directed against the territorial integrity and political independence of another state is imprisonment for up to 10 years.
