And they want us to trust them with face recognition tech

  1. Would they have their radios on them while off duty?

They have a locker in the station presumably?

  2. OOTL what is the facial recognition tech you’re talking about?

I don’t think there’s much wrong with being off duty when you’re off duty, I’m sure if they got a phone call they would pick it up but I don’t think I’d ever take a work laptop or phone around with me. Especially if I knew it was constantly being tracked.

  3. That story is really confusing.

Firstly, why are they allowed to take the radios home with them in the first place? Tetra radios are really expensive given that not a huge number of the are made. Plus, if they’re leaving them at home how are they communicating while on duty?

  4. Facial recognition? The biggest drug dealers in Waterford are 1 family and a bike gang and fuckin nothin is ever done about it so why the fuck they need facial recognition is beyond me.

  5. > “At least 75 per cent of the sample are concerned that [the data] still could be accessed externally and there wasn’t enough been done to make sure that this wasn’t happening,” Dr McParland told the GRA’s annual conference this week.

From the article that the OP linked to. I’d also wonder what external bodies has access to the data.

  6. They couldn’t be trusted with a breathalyzer. Remember a few years back they did thousands of fake tests to bump up the numbers. How can this be even put forward?

  7. I think this is people not understanding tech and trying to keep a good thing going.

    1. Why would you keep Raido’s on you while off duty?
    2. If your on duty and not doing your job there should be some way to monitor that I.E. a GPS device that shows that your still walking the area your ment to walk or whatever it is that they need to do. This is just the police getting the digial version of a superviser to make sure they are not just parked in the back of Aldi to pass the time.
    3. If a garda radio gets stolen they will need to be able to track it to get it back and charge the person who stole it.

I manage mobile devices for the place I work. Part of that software shows me the GPS location on that device. If its lost or stolen I can help track it down. If someone keeps that device on them during the weekend or while not working it will still report their location as its a security feature.

Someone knowing just that much information might say “Work is tracking us, they are constantly montioring where you are and where your going to”. Do we? not at all. I dont care where someone is or is not. I just need to be able to track the device if its lost or stolen.

While I dont like face recognition tech I dont feel that this is a good argument against it.
