The General Workers’ Union has filed an industrial dispute with Transport Malta following a failure by the regulator to recognise the union as the majority choice for worker representation.
The GWU’s Maritime and Aviation Section said the dispute is not about financial or working conditions, but concerns the “fundamental right of workers to choose their representatives freely.” The union said attempts at dialogue had not yielded concrete action from the authority.
Section secretary Jurgen Azzopardi said the GWU is committed to a fair solution but “cannot accept the ongoing disregard for the democratic wishes of the workers.” The union has engaged the Department of Industrial and Employment Relations to ensure legal compliance.
The GWU stated it reserves the right to take any necessary actions, including industrial action, to defend its members.
