That evening, it was time for the state banquet, which saw Queen Mary don a sentimental tiara, one that will surely be part of her royal legacy. A belted Elie Saab cape dress in burgundy was the order of the day, with the mother-of-four wearing the colour that has been a favourite of royal women over the past few months.

The star of the show, of course, was Mary’s Diamond Necklace tiara, a piece that she added to the royal collection in 2012. Created around 1900, the tiara was originally sold as a necklace, made of diamonds and rubies set in gold and silver. As Crown Princess, Mary purchased the piece, alongside a pair of matching earrings, from Bruun Rasmussen in Copenhagen.
