On Thursday night and Friday morning, a yellow alert, the lowest level, will be in effect in central and eastern Latvia due to severe frost, according to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.
The skies will be clear, with slow to moderate easterly and northeasterly winds, and temperatures in most of the country will drop to -24 to -19 degrees Celsius. In many places in Kurzeme and elsewhere on the coast, it will be warmer, down to -18 C to -13 C, but on the coast of Northern Kurzeme, the temperature will only reach around -10 C.
The day will be sunny but also cold, with maximum air temperatures in most of Latvia reaching -10 to -15 C, but warmer in places in Kurzeme – up to -9 to -6 C.
In Rīga, the weather will also be clear with a slow east, northeast wind. The minimum temperature at night will be around -17 C, in the suburbs around -20 C, and the maximum during the day around -10 C.
The weather will become even colder during the weekend, with nighttime temperatures approaching -30 C.
According to the regulations of the Cabinet of Ministers, children under the age of 12 are allowed to skip school if the air temperature is below -20 degrees, while students aged 13 and older can do so if the air temperature has dropped to at least -25 degrees.
