In Tuesday’s quarterfinals, there were victories for the higher-ranked players and favorites — a recurring theme at this opening Slam of the year.
Carlos Alcaraz (1) beat hometown hero, Australia’s Alex de Minaur in straight sets. Alexander Zverev (3) got past 20-year-old American Learner Tien in four, 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-1, 7-6(3).
Then, Jannik Sinner (2) knocked out the American Ben Shelton in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 6-4, keeping the brash Floridian at arm’s length throughout.
As for the remaining quarterfinal, there was awful luck for Lorenzo Musetti (5) who was two sets up on Novak Djokovic (4) at 6-4, 6-3, 1-3 but succumbed to injury and was forced to withdraw.
Djokovic faces Sinner for a place in the final.
