The King of Denmark is to spend three days in Greenland in the
coming weeks at the height of the international dispute begun when
US President, Donald Trump, said he wanted to take over the
island.
King Frederik will arrive in Greenland on February 18 and stay
until February 20.
The three day trip will start in the capital, Nuuk, and
is expected to take King Frederik across Greenland.
The importance of the visit was underlined when it was announced
just hours ahead of the Danish royals also confirming that Frederik
X and his Tasmanian born wife,
Queen Mary, will make a State Visit to Australia in the coming
months.
Frederik and Mary are very fond of Greenland and have made
numerous visits there over the past years. They also gave two of
their children Greenlandic middle names.
The Danish royal family have been keen to underline their
support of Greenland since Donald Trump resumed his calls for the
island to belong to the United States.
In his New Year address King Frederik spoke frequently of his
backing for the island and its people – there are 57,000
inhabitants of Greenland.
Queen Margrethe, Frederik’s mother who abdicated in his favour
in 2024, also chose to wear a golden tiara given to her by the
people of Greenland to the New Year Levee, one of the most
important events in Denmark.
On his accession as king, Frederik also increased the prominence
given to the symbol of Greenland on his standard.
Donald Trump has repeatedly called for Greenland to become part
of the United States with his claims ramping up as 2026 got under
way. He insists that transfer to the US is vital for the country’s
security and that of the wider world.
Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark. It is a semi
autonomous region and there is a strong movement there for full
independence.
There has been widespread opposition to Donald Trump’s
calls.
The visit by King Frederik will be seen as another firm stance
on Greenlannd.
Full details of the trip will be released imminently.
