Cyprus’ Defense Ministry and police were placed on alert after 13 kilograms of TNT explosives went missing during a military engineering exercise at the Kalo Chorio firing range.
Defense Ministry spokesman Christos Pieris said the explosives had been placed at three separate points for a planned series of detonations. Two explosions occurred as scheduled, but the third did not.
Under safety protocol, trainees waited an hour before inspecting the site, where no explosive material was found.
Pieris said investigators are examining two main scenarios: that the third charge detonated simultaneously with the second because both had been pre-positioned, or that the explosives were removed, raising the possibility of theft.
Police are assisting in the investigation.
