The leadership of the Socialists and Democrats (S&D) in the European Parliament will visit Slovenia next week to defend Europe’s democracy and sovereignty against the disorder fueled by the Trumpian far-right, which disrespects fundamental values, justice, and promotes polarisation and hatred.

“Today, Slovenia stands at the heart of Europe – geographically, politically, and in values. But Slovenians now face a defining choice: will their country remain at the centre of European politics, or will it be pushed to the sidelines, into the shadow of Trumpian far-right extremism?” stated Iratxe García, S&D leader.

The delegation, hosted by Slovenian MEP Matjaž Nemec and led by President Iratxe García, will meet with representatives from trade unions and civil society, including the My Voice, My Choice movement. This movement symbolises the resistance against far-right attacks on women’s rights and civil society as a whole.

“In these decisive moments for Slovenia and Europe’s future, the visit of the S&D leadership to Ljubljana sends a clear message: social democrats stand firmly for democracy, a strong and protected civil society, strong public services, independent institutions, and a strong economy that works for people – not against them. In Slovenia, thanks to the Social Democrats, workers’ inclusion and profit sharing are no longer slogans but reality,” said Matjaž Nemec, S&D MEP and head of Slovenian delegation.

“We are going to Slovenia to support our family member Matjaž Nemec and our Slovenian friends, the Socialni Demokrati, in their fight for a pro-European Slovenia and for a better future – built on freedom, equality, solidarity, opportunity, and hope,” added Iratxe García.

Throughout a series of debates and events in Ljubljana, the S&D leadership will deliver a strong message of support for the Slovenian Socialni Demokrati and their pro-European programme, which envisions a future built on equality, social and tax justice, solidarity, opportunity, and hope.

“By actively engaging with civil society, trade unions, and employers during our visit, we will demonstrate the immense importance of these actors as essential pillars of a healthy and functioning democracy and show that listening to their voices lies at the very heart of social democracy,” continued MEP Matjaž Nemec.

“We are proving that there is a real alternative to the illiberal models which undermine democracy – an alternative rooted in solidarity, equality, freedom, and the fight for democracy. Slovenia belongs at the heart of Europe as a credible and respected partner, and only strong social democracy in government can guarantee that. The choice is therefore clear: a progressive, democratic path forward, not a slide towards Trumpian, Orbán-style politics,” concluded MEP Matjaž Nemec.
