The family confirmed the death of Estrella “Inday” Barretto on Jan. 29. Relatives said siblings set aside past conflicts as they cared for their mother in her final days.

MANILA — Estrella “Inday” Barretto, the matriarch of the Barretto family and mother of actresses Gretchen, Marjorie, and Claudine Barretto, died on Thursday, Jan. 29. She was 89, according to multiple Philippine media reports citing family confirmation. The cause of death has not been publicly disclosed.

The death was first confirmed by her son, Joaquin “JJ” Barretto, who posted a brief message on social media announcing his mother’s passing. No additional details were provided at the time.

In a subsequent statement, Claudine Barretto said the family came together following their mother’s death, despite long-standing and publicly documented disputes among the siblings.

“We all did our part — JJ, Michie, Gia, G, Marjorie [and] all the apos, pati apo sa tuhod. Pantay-pantay inalagaan ang mommy. We choose peace over everything,” Claudine said in a message shared on social media and later reported by entertainment news outlets.

The remarks marked a rare public acknowledgment of unity among the Barretto siblings, whose internal conflicts have periodically spilled into public view over the years. Claudine’s statement did not address past disputes directly and focused instead on collective caregiving during their mother’s final days.

Tributes also came from members of the younger generation. Children of Marjorie Barretto shared photos and messages remembering their grandmother, expressing gratitude and affection in posts circulated on social media and later reported by mainstream outlets.

Inday Barretto was married to Miguel Barretto, who died in 2019. The couple had seven children, several of whom became prominent figures in Philippine entertainment. Over the decades, Inday Barretto largely stayed out of the spotlight, though she was occasionally referenced in public family disputes involving her daughters.
