According to a Reuters report, European Central Bank Executive Board Member Piero Cipollone said the euro zone must be self-sufficient in handling payments and that the digital euro will provide the needed infrastructure for retail transactions. Cipollone made the remarks in a remote address at a conference in Italy on Thursday, January 29.

He stated that the digital euro scheme, alongside two other ECB projects for wholesale payments, will give the euro zone the tools required “to keep its house in order.” When asked if the digital euro could boost Europe’s position relative to the United States, Cipollone responded, “That can give it more strength.”
