Inflation in the year to April is at 9%, whereas last month:
> Sunak came under intense fire for rejecting calls to raise benefits by more than 3.1 per cent — a figure based on inflation rates in September 2021 . . .
Baroness Philippa Stroud, who helped set up Universal Credit:
> “I just genuinely think the benefits should be uprated in line with the current inflation — they should be brought forward.
> “That would be entirely possibly to do. The defence has been made that it can’t be done immediately. I have spoken with DWP officials, who’ve said universal credit can be done immediately.
> “I know the legacy benefits are much harder to do,” she added. “You could do a one-off payment for the equivalent value for those on legacy”.
> Lady Stroud, the CEO of the Legatum Institute think-tank,
This horrid human being is responsible at least in part for universal credit. Now claimants, disabled people, on ESA will have to re apply for their benefits to go onto universal credit. As was always the plan. I’m literally scared of the DWP at this point, for my safety. She can just fuck off I don’t believe anything she has to say. Same as ian Duncan Smith. Says a load of shit because they don’t want to appear heartless and then next thing you see him being a total cunt just in a different context or to some other group of people.
No they should just add the uplift back.
Even before Covid benefits weren’t enough to live off.
If they uprate the benefits in line with inflation that gives me less than £3 a week extra.
I don’t buy that there is no money to do it. They always find money for things they want to do.
They are only bothered about the loss of profits that happens when the lowest remunerated have no money to spend. Nothing more. No concern there for human lives, just their profit margins.
look the person responsible for the first rise in food bank usage
Legacy Benefits have systems built in to automatically pay out should weather hit a certain temperature or to hand out a Christmas bonus. It would be entirely possible to manipulate these if they really couldn’t find a way to legitimately raise value.
UC has proven to be more dynamically adjustable or the £20 uptick would never have happened.
There’s zero excuse to not raise benefits except for not wanting to. Remember UC pays disabled people up to £300 less per month for the exact same situation, there’s no reason except for Tories like this peer deciding to not replace the Severe Disability Premium.
I’m terrified of the change being forced onto me. UC is not fit for purpose, it is not fit for disabled people and barely works for single mothers, job seekers and part timers. Plus the DWP is so backed up they’re taking ages to process the claims where law changes mean they’re required to pay PIP mobility rates to people; with how much backlog they have I’m very aware that they may fuck up and delay my payments during the change over and it will be me who suffers especially as my housing benefit is no longer securely separated if on UC. Previous DWP disruptions messed up bills and food but you knew you’d have rent paid, now DWP errors will ruin your entire life and risk your home.
To anyone who has not endured these systems, the DWP genuinely makes me feel like suicide is a necessary backup plan. The stress of handling the process is so hard that even when it goes in your favour it takes a massive toll on your health and wellbeing during it and it takes days to rest easy after any good news. I literally get a panic attack when a letter through my door looks like a DWP envelope. If I didn’t need to use the DWP I absolutely would not. Imagine being afraid every time you hear the letterbox wondering if the postman has just delivered you the news that you’re about to lose everything.
I think they are trying to salvage their reputation now in advance of the return to victorian conditions literally millions of people will be facing this winter.
Universal Credit is the single worse policy that the Conservatives pursued from 2010.
Not only are millions of WORKING people now on benefits, we have thousands of companies who have become dependent on the concept.
It seems to have been a quasi-religious ideology at it’s root. I say it’s decidely un-conservative for the state to be so interested in the relationship between an employee and an employer. But more than that it has been an economic disaster for the UK, leaving millions of WORKING people unable to afford to live.
My problem with the Conservatives are the elected officials. Generally the old guard and the unelected peers have far more of a moral compass.
It would be nice for moving out to be back on the table.
I claim carers allowance (full time carer for my son) and this gets taken off of my uc. Its ridiculous.
It was fine to scrap a £20 uplift a few months back, even with the cost of living crisis on the horizon and the increase in fuel prices known to be coming. Calling for an increase now is a PR exercise, not a genuine concern for those on benefits.
