One person has died in a two-vehicle crash in Matamata this afternoon.

Officers were called to the crash at the intersection of Puketutu Rd and Buckland Rd shortly after midday.

“Sadly, one person has died,” a police spokesperson said.

St John sent one ambulance, one rapid response unit and one helicopter to the scene.

The road was closed while the Serious Crash Unit examined the scene, but has since been reopened.

“Inquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing,” police said.

It followed several other fatal crashes across the country within a 48-hour period, prompting a firm message from police to be cautious on the roads.

“Our staff have been busy with several other serious injury crashes that were also attended during this period,” said District Road Policing Manager Inspector Sarah Thorn.

“There are quite simply too many crashes happening on our roads, and the consequences can be devastating.”
