GRADY COUNTY (KFOR) — An oil well blowout in Grady County on Thursday forced dozens of families nearby out of their homes as natural gas spewed for over 24 hours.

Now, the oil company, Staghorn Petroleum, is working with the Grady County Sheriff’s Office to reimburse anyone affected by the issue.

Homeowners near the well site described the sound as a jet plane.

“The oil well blowout started Thursday. We were hoping that by Friday afternoon, folks could go back after that,” said Interim Director Bill Flores, with Grady County Emergency Management.

This prompted a mandatory evacuation on Thursday, forcing 30 to 40 families to leave their homes.

By Friday, the well was reportedly capped, allowing people to return home.

“Electric companies were out there trying to keep the static from sparking anything more,” said Flores. “Then once that was done, they were able to systematically put the power back on so folks could get home by the end of Friday night, which is a victory.”

Staghorn Petroleum II, LLC, operates the well. Grady County Emergency Management says the clean-up process and investigation is underway.

“I believe staghorn will be out there for a week or two just cleaning up, whatever that means, and investigating the incident,” said Flores.

As of right now, it is unclear how the blowout happened. News 4 reached out to Staghorn Petroleum on Friday morning, but has not heard back.

“I’m assuming it’s going to take a little while to investigate, see if any parts were faulty,” said Flores. “I mean, there’s a lot to that. So I think it will take a little while for us to get a real final review from that investigation.”

For residents who were affected by the evacuation, Staghorn Petroleum is offering reimbursements for the inconvenience.

“They’re going to meet at the clubhouse at the Winter Creek Golf course tomorrow, February 2nd, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and they just asked in that post if people could bring their receipts to help them mitigate, reimbursing them for their troubles, which to me is incredible,” said Flores.

Law firms have posted online, advising those looking a reimbursement to read up on any paperwork the company could make you sign.
