Help Finding this Parish?

  1. Would appreciate anyone’s help here, planning on visiting Ireland this summer and would like to see where some of my family grew up and were baptized. I can see this certificate says she was part of the Diocese of Elphin, but for the life of me I cannot decipher the parish. When searching online I can’t really see a parish that matches this either. Maybe the parish no longer exists? My closest guess is Glinsk, but would appreciate an Irish person’s input. Thank you.

  2. If you call to the parish priests house in Tulsk they will have the baptism records for your relatives- maybe phone before hand as the priests can be a bit protective about the records . Btw Tulsk is easy to find it’s on a main road – it’s a small village.

  3. Hey u/LarryTheSchmohawk

I have been doing some geneology stuff for my family tree during lockdown so can help with some sites to look up.

There is 4 main free places to look up

    1. [http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/](http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/) – search the 1901 and 1911 census
    2. [IrishGeneology.ie – Civil Records](https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp) – search civil birth, marriage and death records
    3. [https://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=placeSearch](https://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=placeSearch) – 1850 Griffith Valuation

What you have is a baptism record, you can also search for them but only for Dublin, Part of Cork and Kerry – ([IrishGeneology.ie – Church Records](https://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/)). Not useful for you as you are looking in Roscommon.

From searching the Civil Records, you can find Mary’s records [here](https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-perform-search.jsp?namefm=MARY&namel=MCGARRY&exact=&name2fm=&name2l=&location=&yyfrom=1895&yyto=1895&century=&decade=&sort=&pageSize=100&ddBfrom=&mmBfrom=&yyBfrom=&ddMfrom=&mmMfrom=&yyMfrom=&ddDfrom=&mmDfrom=&yyDfrom=&ddPfrom=&mmPfrom=&yyPfrom=&ddBto=&mmBto=&yyBto=&ddMto=&mmMto=&yyMto=&ddDto=&mmDto=&yyDto=&ddPto=&mmPto=&yyPto=&locationB=&locationM=&locationD=&locationP=&keywordb=&keywordm=&keywordd=&keywordp=&event=B&district=Strokestown&submit=Search). If you click in the the record image you will see her’s is the 7th record down – Mary Kate. It lists both parents names so it is easy to confirm it is a match. What you can also see on the record is the townland where she was born(i.e. where her parents lived). It’s Derryquirk, in Roscommon – [Map of Derryquirk](https://www.townlands.ie/roscommon/roscommon/kilcooley/tulsk/derryquirk/)

    Aside – [What is a Townland](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Townland)

From this you can look up the Census for Derryquirk

[1901 Census](http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Roscommon/Tulsk/Derryquirk/1673384/) – Mary is 6 living with her parent and 3 brothers

[1911 Census](http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Roscommon/Tulsk/Derryquirk/796574/) – Mary is not named in the house, but her parent have had 3 children since the previous census.

If we search the 1911 census using Mary’s name, age, county and the fact that where she is living, she will not be the daughter of the head of the household……we can see a Mary McGarry is living as a lodger in Ardkeenagh. This is the nearest townland to the south, so there is strong possibility this is her.

Now looking at the 1850 Griffith Valuation we can see there is only one McGarry living in [Derryquirk](https://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doNameSearch&PlaceID=1122719&county=Roscommon&barony=Roscommon&parish=Kilcooley&townland=%3Cb%3EDerryquirk%3C/b%3E), a Michael McGarry.

If we look for a death cert for this Michael McGarry, we can see that Matthew McGarry(Mary’s father) the son of Michael and present at his death.([Death Cert](https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details-civil/9271824130893?b=https%3A%2F%2Fcivilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie%2Fchurchrecords%2Fcivil-perform-search.jsp%3Fnamefm%3Dmichael%26namel%3Dmcgarry%26exact%3D%26name2fm%3D%26name2l%3D%26location%3D%26yyfrom%3D%26yyto%3D1900%26type%3DD%26century%3D%26decade%3D%26sort%3D%26pageSize%3D100%26ddBfrom%3D%26mmBfrom%3D%26yyBfrom%3D%26ddMfrom%3D%26mmMfrom%3D%26yyMfrom%3D%26ddDfrom%3D%26mmDfrom%3D%26yyDfrom%3D%26ddPfrom%3D%26mmPfrom%3D%26yyPfrom%3D%26ddBto%3D%26mmBto%3D%26yyBto%3D%26ddMto%3D%26mmMto%3D%26yyMto%3D%26ddDto%3D%26mmDto%3D%26yyDto%3D%26ddPto%3D%26mmPto%3D%26yyPto%3D%26locationB%3D%26locationM%3D%26locationD%3D%26locationP%3D%26keywordb%3D%26keywordm%3D%26keywordd%3D%26keywordp%3D%26event%3D%26district%3DStrokestown%26submit%3DSearch)). Therefore, the Michael McGarry in the Griffith Valuation is most likely Mary’s Grandfather.

You can see in the Griffith Valuation Record that Michael McGarry lived in plot 6a and was also leasing land in plot 1. Using the Griffith Map we can see there is a house on plot 6.Although this house is no longer there, the approx location of where your Mary was born is here – [Google Map link](https://www.google.ie/maps/place/53%C2%B047'07.3%22N+8%C2%B013'45.4%22W/@53.785369,-8.2304011,18z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0x99b2af8fa5e33306!7e2!8m2!3d53.7853688!4d-8.2292898?hl=en-GB)
