Is Johnson’s Rwanda plan a crime against humanity? | Possibly, yes.

  1. > The scheme is certainly in breach the UK’s obligations under the Council of Europe Anti-Trafficking Convention, which requires ratifying states to investigate trafficking claims and protect victims . . . Under the UK government’s Rwanda policy such a review would not take place . . .

    > Perhaps most damning of all, the UK government’s Rwandan scheme is a stark threat of crimes against humanity.

    > Article 7 of the Rome Statute of the International Court defines a “crime against humanity” as a state policy to undertake an “attack directed against any civilian population” that includes deportation, forcible transfer of populations, persecution of identifiable groups, or “other inhumane acts of a similar character intentionally causing great suffering, or serious injury.”

    > It is difficult to imagine a publicly stated UK policy of recent years more designed to conform to the definition of a crime against humanity . . .

    > Johnson’s UK government has been exceptionally coherent in relation to its contempt for human rights and rule of law. Given this, it is entirely possible that they plan on implementing their brutal plans for migrants and refugees regardless of what the courts have to say about it.

  2. It doesn’t matter whether you think this plan is a good one or a shit one; it’s not a fucking “crime against humanity”.

The holocaust was a crime against humanity. The Rwandan genocide was a crime against humanity. The genocide in the Balkans in the late 90’s was a crime against humanity. Sending migration applicants to another country isn’t even close to being anything like in the same company.

This isn’t going to win anyone any arguing tokens. No one will benefit from trying to make such a vapid argument. All it does is seek to dilute the seriousness of the term for cheap political points.

  3. I wonder how many countries they “approached” that refused before finding one that would accept.

We need to know the entire sordid fucking story.
