Was driving to Cork on the M7/M8 last September when Cannonball was going down. I stayed in the left lane doing 120kph but most of these cars were in the right lane easily doing 200kph.
I don’t get it, is it a race on public roads? Are they supposed to stay within the speed limit or do they get an exemption for the day to break the law? I didn’t see any of them pulled over by the Gardai.
I’d imagine all participants are told that it’s not a race and that you must stay within the speed limit but put a bunch of guys together with souped up cars and they’re going to show off what they have.
Did this before. There are 3 types of entrant; very wealthy men, corporate teams, and gangsters. I’d say over half the cars are rentals. You need 3 drivers imo because each night is a BIG session, so you need a sober driver the next day. It’s very weird in some counties, the Gardaí actively encourage you to break the speed limits. We were being escorted on to a motorway by a squad car doing 130 and once the first car overtook them we all did, guys doing close to 200kmh and the Garda taking videos. In some they even clear the roads for you, in one they created a 2km track that led into a parade. But in others they’re out with speed guns all over the place. You soon learn which is which. It’s great craic, I’d highly recommend it.
Folks read the article. This is the retro / classic car cannonball so most cars in it can barely break the speed limit.
