I’ve read that they didn’t remove the insignia up until recently, so therefore this somehow means they’re sympathetic to nazism or something. By this logic Finland was nazi-aligned until early 2010s? Finland was pretty close to the Soviets throughout the post-war period.

Then I read claims that ”them deliberately preserving it to evoke connotations, and provoke Russians. Russia heavily highlights WW2 and especially hatred against Nazi symbols and Nazi-anything to raise patriotism and nationalism.”

This is pure interjection, with no evidence in the slightest. Does India provoke Russia as it allows Hindus and Buddhists to display the Swastika? Did Russia ever protest that being used in the Finnish airforce? No. Finland and USSR were very close during the Cold war, so clearly it wasn’t really an issue for either party.

Voroshilov also wore the Order of the White Rose, [which has a swastika on the chain.](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FT7pMS9XoAAVv3_?format=jpg&name=medium)

Curious what you finns think about this.

  1. The swastika is not a Nazi symbol. It’s a symbol the Nazis used. A bazillion people did before Nazis did.

I don’t mind stopping its use due to the Nazi taint, there’s very little to gain by insisting the world to learn the difference and understand it.

  2. I don’t like it, because people don’t study history and think it’s nazis. Also don’t like the association. Hitler ruined the symbol and it shouldn’t be used anymore by Europeans. Hindus have used it millenia and buddhist so they can keep it.

  3. Swastika is an ancient symbol amongst Finnic peoples, it has been used f.ex. in Karelia since the iron age at least. One of my family lines used it as their “house mark” (puumerkki), as did many others. Nazis used the symbol for a few decades, my ancestors used it for hundreds and maybe thousands of years. So no, I wouldn’t let the nazis just have it 😏
