Denmark has signed a long-term framework agreement with Rheinmetall to supply a wide range of ammunition types.
German company announced the deal on 2 February which covers seven-year agreement for medium-calibre ammunition for air-defence and armoured platforms, 120 mm tank rounds, and 155 mm artillery ammunition.
The agreement is notable for both its duration and its breadth and purpose. Rather than focusing on replenishing training stocks, the framework is structured to support continuous combat readiness across Denmark’s core armoured, air-defence and artillery formations. This is because the planning is based on the idea that there will be long-term, high-intensity operations, where the rate of ammunition use is much higher than it is during peacetime.
The inclusion of 155 mm artillery ammunition is particularly notable, given the calibre’s central role in modern land warfare and its high expenditure rates in recent conflicts. By securing a multi-year supply arrangement, Denmark is seeking to mitigate supply-chain risks while ensuring predictable access to critical munitions during periods of heightened demand.
The deal is also part of a bigger trend in Europe, where armed forces are moving away from short-term procurement cycles and toward longer-term industrial partnerships that are meant to make operations more resilient. For Rheinmetall, the agreement further consolidates its position as a key supplier in Europe’s expanding ammunition market, while for Denmark it represents a structural step toward aligning procurement policy with wartime readiness requirements.
