Last year, approximately 1.17 million tons of crude oil were extracted from Hungarian fields, the highest figure in the 2000s. Gas production approached 2 billion cubic metres, which is more than one-fifth of the annual consumption. Production exceeding this level was last seen in 2013.
The volume of crude oil produced in Hungary increased by more than a quarter million tonnes compared with 2021 levels. In 2025, monthly production exceeded 100,000 tonnes in six months, which wasn’t reached in the previous year.
“To reduce exposure to imports, it is worth meeting as large a share of energy demand as possible from resources available within the country’s borders,” said Gábor Czepek, State Secretary at the Ministry of Energy.
László Nagy, President of the Supervisory Authority for Regulatory Affairs, highlighted that the 2025 production figures also mark the peak of five consecutive years of continuous growth.
To further increase fossil production, the Ministry of Energy relaunched mining concession tenders in 2024 after a five-year hiatus. Successful bidders were awarded 20-year rights to explore and produce hydrocarbons in six areas. The ministry is expected to announce additional concessions soon.
