So the oft-trumpeted “international community” is a ~~circle jerk~~ mutual admiration community after all.
>Positive views of Russia have been retained in China, Indonesia, Egypt, Vietnam, Algeria, Morocco, Malaysia, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.
That basically tells you everything you need to know.
People who don’t care about democracy or human rights don’t care about democracy or human rights, news at 11.
There’s a huge amount of anti-Western resentment in the world; this poll taps into this. Putin is viewed as a someone who repeatedly pokes Western liberalism in the eye, and that makes a lot of people happy.
A more interesting question would be “would you want to be Russia’s neighbor?” My guess is that virtually no one would say “yes.” That’s a better measure of public opinion than the more open ended questions about favorability. When no one wants to be near you, you’re probably not a good person (or country) in any meaningful way.
I say Germany is a western ~~liberal~~ democracy.
People overrate how much support there is for the whole Ukraine thing .Only the west and our allies care. The rest of the world couldn’t give to shit about this invasion
“Limited to”. Russia defines itself to not be like western democracies and basically declares war against the west aiming for a new world order without influential democracies and the non democratic countries don’t care. What a surprise.
Western liberal democracies also account for 2/3 of the global economy, so it doesn’t really matter what poor fucks in shitholes think anyway.
I think a lot of people go by the idea: The enemy of my enemy is my friend.
Delusional.
The enemy of your enemy is not necessary positive to you. It’s just another enemy.
are we supposed to care what a bunch of third world illiberal countries think? the western rules based international order is literally why they still aren’t colonies and backwards as fuck. I’m sorry if that sounds rude but it’s the truth. The post-war order has brought do much prosperity to these places that have never traditionally had it. They don’t understand what is at stake for them if this international order falls.
The only countries’ opinion I care about are the ones who understand what the alternative world order would be. The one where might makes right. The one that caused two world wars.
It’s not only having democratic values that see this correlation. It’s having an independent and free press.
>> Majorities in a total of 20 countries thought economic ties with Russia should not be cut due to the war in Ukraine. They included Greece, Kenya, Turkey, China, Israel, Egypt, Nigeria, Indonesia, South Africa, Vietnam, Algeria, the Philippines, Hungary, Mexico, Thailand, Morocco, Malaysia, Peru, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia. Colombians were evenly split.
I would expect Hungary, but Greece? What the fuck.
