HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTV) – Leaders of a county in South Carolina gave their support Tuesday night to name part of a proposed interstate after President Donald Trump.
The Horry County Council gave its support for the naming when it passed a resolution during its Feb. 3 meeting.
The resolution came up after a state lawmaker introduced a bill in the South Carolina House on Jan. 20 that sought to name a section of the future I-73 “President Donald J. Trump Highway.”
I-73 does not currently exist in South Carolina; however, there are plans for the interstate to connect northern Michigan to the Myrtle Beach area on the South Carolina coast.
According to the plans, the future I-73 would go through Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina.
Trump ‘championed’ I-73 project, bill says
Hope for creating Interstate 73 has been around for decades but it was not until 2017 that a federal permit was granted for its construction. That permit came during the time of the first Trump administration.
Both the Horry County resolution and bill filed in the state House credited Trump for helping the project along. The resolution claimed Trump “renewed and continued his support of I-73″ during his second term, while the bill said he “championed” the project.
“It would be fitting and proper to recognize President Trump’s commitment to making the South Carolina portion of Interstate Highway 73 a reality by naming this segment of highway in his honor,” the bill read in part.
The bill was referred to committee after it was introduced but no further action had been taken as of this writing. As for the Horry County resolution, it was simply a show of support for the naming and has no legal authority.
The Horry County resolution initially had a line that said support for naming the future interstate would be dropped if funding was not allocated by Jan. 20, 2029, which is when Trump’s presidency will end. However, that line was taken out by councilmembers prior to the resolution’s approval.
Sister-station WMBF reported that funding for I-73 was left out of South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster’s executive budgets in 2024, 2025 and 2026 — despite his support for the proposed interstate. The funding was reportedly left out because McMaster wanted to see more local support for the project.
In addition to Horry County, the current plans have the future I-73 going through Dillon, Marion and Marlboro counties.
