On the afternoon of the 6th, a fire caused by an explosion of liquefied natural gas (LNG) broke out at a cement column manufacturing plant in Jinju City, Gyeongsangnam-do, and 11 employees of the plant were seriously injured.
According to the Gyeongnam Fire Department, the fire broke out at a factory in Jinseong-myeon, Jinju-si at around 3:33 p.m. that day. It was confirmed that one male employee in his 30s was seriously injured and 10 others were slightly injured in the initial explosion. Fortunately, all of them are not life-threatening, and dozens of people at the factory are said to have evacuated themselves.
The fire authorities, who were dispatched after receiving a report that “gas exploded at the factory,” deployed 41 equipment and 163 personnel to complete the extinguishing at around 5:49 p.m., about two hours later.
The explosion shock spread the flames to nearby hills at around 3:56 p.m., and forest authorities mobilized 146 personnel, seven helicopters and 38 vehicles to extinguish the main fire in about an hour.
Police suspect that while heating the cement curing machine at the factory at the time, the cover flew due to internal pressure, causing a shock and explosion of a nearby LNG tank.
Police and fire authorities are investigating the exact cause of the fire and explosion and the extent of property damage.
