This year’s women’s tournament is one of the most highly anticipated events in recent memory. Not only because of the excitement of the United States taking on Canada, but also because of the introduction of the Professional Women’s Hockey League, players from all around the globe are showing their talents nightly.
Germany had a rough start to their tournament. They faced Sweden in a game that many believed could determine who finishes first in the group. Despite the Germans scoring first with Nina Jobst-Smith’s marker, they ended up getting into penalty trouble, losing 4-1.
They take on a Japan team that is on the second half of a back-to-back, having faced France on Friday. While the French gave them everything they could handle, the Japanese managed to pull out a 3-2 win. Rui Ukita and Akane Shiga played well, with Makoto Ito scoring the game-winning goal with just minutes to go in regulation.
A win for Japan would all but secure a spot in the quarterfinals.
