[OC] I’m currently in Svalbard, and the local Swiss Consulate is probably the northernmost diplomatic mission Switzerland has

  1. Isn’t it the northernmost diplomatic mission in the world? The only other country that has a diplomatic mission on Svalbard is Russia in the village of Barentsburg, which is slightly more soth than Svalbard.

  2. That is an honorary consulate. Could I get a new Swiss passport in there or a new ID card if I am living on Svalbard?

  3. It’s “only” an honorary consulate, meaning someone (usually, but not necessarily, a Swiss national) assumes the responsibility of providing assistance to Swiss citizens present there. However, it has no standard consular activity (such as visa issuance, etc.). It’s basically a point-of-contact, the lowest form of consular activity you can have.
