The order imposes a system that allows the United States to impose additional tariffs on imports from any country that directly or indirectly purchases, imports, or otherwise acquires goods or services from Iran

The U.S. president, Donald Trump, signed an executive order on Friday the 6th, reaffirming the ongoing national emergency regarding Iran and establishing the process to impose tariffs on countries that acquire any goods or services from Tehran.

The order imposes a system that allows the United States to impose additional tariffs on imports from any country that directly or indirectly purchases, imports or otherwise acquires goods or services from Iran.

“The President can modify the Order if circumstances change, in response to retaliation, or if Iran or an affected country takes significant steps to address the national emergency and align with the United States,” the White House said in a statement.

According to the Trump administration, the measure is aimed at protecting national security and American interests, as Iran pursues a policy that “seeks nuclear capabilities, supports terrorism, develops ballistic missiles, and destabilizes the region.”

In parallel, the Republican also signed an order that re-prioritizes the list of U.S. arms customers in favor of countries with higher defense spending and strategic importance in their region.
