MINSK, 7 February (BelTA) – In a broadcast on the Belarus 1 TV channel, one of the doctors from a medical institution in Gomel Oblast spoke about the medical assistance provided in Belarus to Russian military personnel freed as part of a swap with Ukraine, BelTA has learned.

As noted during the broadcast, within the framework of ongoing and consistent interaction between the Belarusian, Russian, and Ukrainian sides, the implementation of humanitarian missions to save lives and repatriate citizens of Russia and Ukraine continues. This work is carried out consistently and at the highest level. The day before, the Ukrainian side transferred a group of Russian military personnel to the Belarusian side. Considering their health condition, in order to provide qualified assistance, some of them were immediately placed in a medical institution in Gomel Oblast. Under the direct instruction of the president, all conditions have been created here for their treatment, swift recovery, and return home.

“A group of servicemen from the Russian Federation was admitted to our medical institution. The patients’ condition is assessed as severe. One patient was in critical condition upon admission. During diagnostics, intra-abdominal bleeding with a two-phase rupture of the spleen was detected. Emergency surgery was performed. Necessary medical assistance was provided. At the moment, the patient’s condition is severe but stable, with positive dynamics,” the doctor stated in the broadcast.

“A number of the patients have multiple foreign bodies in various parts of their bodies, which had not been operated on and have already developed complications such as neuropathies and osteomyelitis. One of the patients suffered an acute cerebrovascular accident. All patients are receiving the full range of diagnostic and therapeutic measures. Currently, the condition of all patients is stable,” he added.

One of the servicemen shared: “Where we were being held, in the detention center, there were three young men in the cell with us. They’ve already been sitting for a year and a half, waiting for an exchange. They told us: last year, on 4 February, they just called out a name and said: ‘You have 20 minutes to get ready’. They were simply taken out at night for the exchange. We even joked how funny it would be if it happened exactly the same this year. And that’s exactly what happened. We didn’t expect it.”

All servicemen in Belarus were able to contact their families, informed their loved ones that they are safe and receiving necessary support.

“[Belarus gave us] a warm welcome. We were fed, given fresh clothes. Medical aid was provided. Everything is good, friendly. I thank the Republic of Belarus, our brothers. I am truly grateful,” said one of the Russian servicemen.

Belarus will continue to fulfill its humanitarian mission and provide assistance in matters of prisoner exchange and liberation, it was added during the broadcast.

As was previously reported, at the end of last year Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko pardoned 31 Ukrainian citizens. “In furtherance of the agreements reached between U.S. President Donald Trump and Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko, at the request of the Ukrainian side and with the aim of creating conditions for the settlement of the armed conflict in the neighboring state, guided by the principles of humanity and as a gesture of goodwill, the president has pardoned 31 Ukrainian citizens who had committed criminal offenses on the territory of our country,” Natalya Eismont, the Press Secretary of the Belarusian President, said back then.
