  1. “The couple expressed their surprise about the housing crisis here in Cork, We did not realise how difficult it was to rent. We have used every website, like Daft.ie, but when they find out that we have dogs, they say no to us.”

I mean 5 minutes of research would have told them that.

  2. The housing crisis is shit but people need to do their research when considering whether it’s feasible to move to a particular country before they’ve moved.

I’m genuinely amazed that people are still moving here in large numbers unless they’re going to be getting paid massive salaries.

Edit: I know people feel I’m being harsh and I do hope they get somewhere soon but I’ve lived abroad myself in a number of different countries and accommodation in your chosen location along with jobs and the ability to support yourself etc. are the first things you look at or should look at prior to heading off. There is an element of personal responsibility here as well

  3. >The Galician couple decided to move to Cork after finding that there was no stability in Spain, when it came to employment.

I’m working in Spain at the moment and I find it better than Ireland in terms of employment, standard of living, and economic stability.

Everywhere is hit with the housing crisis and inflation at the moment, the one thing that separates Ireland from the rest of the world is the reliance on credit.

Almost every Irish person I know either has a credit union/bank loan, financed car or mortgage, and they’re in debt living from paycheck to paycheck. In other parts of the world, people will live with what they can afford – even if that means driving an old car or living in a caravan/mobile home/camper van. Drive through the main street of a town in Ireland, you’ll see a row of expensive cars with the odd auld banger thrown in the mix. Drive through a street in Spain, it’ll be a row of auld bangers with the odd expensive car in-between.

  4. Reason I was never able to immigrate is because I have 2 small dogs and I know there’s a housing crisis.

I learned that by subscribing here and seeing it EVERYDAY 😂.

  5. Given that so many people took in pets during the pandemic. There should be an onus on government to give renter more leeway with pets etc. I mean you can leave them with your parents!

The lack of properties is going to cripple employment over the next year if there is no relief on supply because demand going down is going to have consequences for the wider economy

  6. What I never understand is how surprised people are? Do your own research for ffs. 101 of moving to a country. Nor do I understand why so many gobshites want to come here and are surprised when it’s not all leprechauns and rainbows.

  7. Allot of people on here saying people really need to do their research, and I agree, but even when some people do they still don’t want to listen to the answer, complete confirming bias. I’ve commented more times than I can count to try and help and save someone hassle considering moving here, but always the same

Foreigner : hey guys considering coming to your lovely country for work and study

Irish person : Google housing crisis, seriously don’t right now

Foreigner : yeah I see that…….. I’m very much set on it though, should I bring a coat?

Irish person : you’ll be fucking homeless, so yeah, bring a coat
