Because we have a president who is an incompetent afraid puppy
We have a very incompetent government led by prime minister Rutte who personally invited the ruzzian oligarchs in the Netherlands AFTER MH17.. You can guess where his priorities are.. Somehow he gets reelected again and again…
That article severely overstates how much we care about MH-17. Its not some kind of Dutch 911. Just a mayor event that happened a few years ago but we largely moved on about.
In the grand picture of the war, its also a very minor event. It would be in very bad taste to push the narrative to Ukraine that we know how they are feeling because of MH-17. Because what’s going on there is far worse than that and the truth is, we don’t have a clue what its like to live through months of constant warfare..
The focus now also lies on ending the war. MH-17 took a backseat to that and may very well be sacrificed if needed to save Ukraine..
There actually have been references to MH17, swamped by later putinesque events and mass shootings somewhere.
We praten er al 8 jaar over, maar we zijn kapotgemaakt en cynisch gemaakt. Want de meeste weten dat ondanks al het pijn en leed dat de slachtoffers en hun families is aangedaan, de daders gaan nooit gerechtigheid kennen.
Na 8 jaar praten, het enige wat mensen voelen is pijn en frustratie.
It’s not talked about much (presumably because it’s an emotional and uncomfortable topic yo talk about openly) but the relative common-ness of Ukrainian flags in the Netherlands is a sign that the Netherlands hasn’t forgotten MH17 or who’s responsible. To me, the Ukrainian people are fellow victims of the same criminal regime. That creates a bond of sorts.
I mean, you don’t see a lot of calls in the Dutch media for handing over parts of Ukraine to Russia, except for the usual group of edgy Putinophiles. That’s a big difference compared to France, Germany and Italy. A lot of that has to do with MH17, I think. Same with the amount of military aid we’re sending.

Sorry but what is there left to say? Fuck Russia for that. I’d say it’s a reason to donate all the equipment we can miss but honestly we should be doing that anyhow.
Ik zou eigenlijk niet precies weten wat we er precies aan kunnen of konden doen. Hadden we Oekraïne eerder wapens moeten sturen? Soldaten naar de Donbas sturen in 2015 om de rebellen uit te schakelen? Een kopie van de Amerikaanse reactie op 911 lijkt me sowieso een slecht idee, want die leverde tienduizenden doden op.
The mighty dollar, dispite all what happened we still have to do business.
Dat is onze ~~VVD~~ VOC mentaliteit: niemand voor het hoofd stoten waar we nog geld aan kunnen verdienen.
We kinda put it away in our memory.
But even if we would be talking about MH17 a lot, there still wouldn’t be anything we can do.
