The Strategy and Institutional Effectiveness Office at Qatar University (QU) organised a training workshop titled ‘Analytical Thinking Skills in the University Workplace: From Data Collection to Decision-Making’. The workshop was attended by staff members from the Department of Strategy and performance Quality and the Department of Institutional Analytics and Research, both affiliated with the Office.
The workshop was delivered by Dr Mahmood Ahmed, ‘manager of Institutional Analytics and Research Department. It aimed to enhance participants’ analytical capabilities and enable them to move beyond data collection toward effective data analysis, interpretation, and alignment with the university’s strategic objectives, thereby supporting evidence-based institutional decision-making.
The workshop covered a range of applied topics, including analytical thinking methodologies; transforming numerical data into meaningful insights through pattern and relationship analysis; distinguishing between correlation and causation; evaluating the quality of evidence; and developing institutional recommendations linked to strategic indicators and objectives. The sessions were highly interactive and featured practical activities and case studies drawn from QU’s work environment.
In this context, Dr. Muna Al-Marzouqi, vice president for Strategy and Institutional Effectiveness at QU, emphasised that the initiative is part of ongoing professional development efforts for the Office’s staff. She noted the Office’s commitment to fostering a unified institutional analytical culture, improving the quality of reports and analyses, and strengthening integration among planning, performance, and institutional research units in support of the University’s development and institutional transformation journey.
At the conclusion of the workshop, participants commended its practical content and applied approach, highlighting its value in developing their analytical skills, enhancing their ability to interpret indicators, and formulating clear, actionable recommendations that support decision-makers and contribute to achieving QU’s strategic goals.
