A shallow magnitude 2.9 earthquake was reported early morning near Ubrique, Cadiz, Andalusia, Spain.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Sunday, February 8th, 2026, at 5:58 am local time at a shallow depth of 14. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera, IPMA), which listed it as a magnitude 2.9 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include Spain’s Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN) at magnitude 3.0, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 3.0.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include El Bosque (pop. 2,000) located 6 km from the epicenter, Ubrique (pop. 17,000) 8 km away, and Prado del Rey (pop. 5,900) 10 km away. In Arcos de la Frontera (pop. 31,200, 26 km away), Ronda (pop. 36,800, 32 km away), Estepona (pop. 67,000, 46 km away), Moron de la Frontera (pop. 27,800, 47 km away), and Las Cabezas de San Juan (pop. 16,400, 48 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
