LAWTON, Okla. (KSWO) – A local pastor is calling for unity and reflection after a White House staffer shared a controversial social media video on February 5, 2026.
The video portrayed several political figures as characters from The Lion King, including President Trump as the Lion King. The video also included a scene depicting former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama as monkeys.
Mike Keahbone Sr., pastor of First Baptist Church Lawton, said his heart was broken by the video.
“It was broken because I immediately knew many of my brothers and sisters would be wounded by such a thoughtless act,” Keahbone said. “Scripture is clear about the value God places on every individual. We are image bearers of God. We are fearfully and wonderfully made.”
Historical context drives concern
Keahbone said the imagery matters because of its historical significance.
“In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Black people were frequently portrayed as apes, monkeys, and gorillas to justify segregation and argue against civil rights,” he said. “It was an intentional attempt to rob people of their humanity and dignity. That history is real, and the pain connected to it is real.”
The pastor said he believes most people are not looking for a political fight but are trying to figure out how to respond appropriately.
Scripture-based response
Keahbone referenced several Bible verses in his response, including Genesis 1:27, which states that every person is made in the image of God.
“That truth should shape how we speak about one another, portray one another, and think about one another,” he said.
He also cited James 3:9-10, which addresses how followers of Jesus should speak about others.
“This moment does not need more outrage, division, or political weaponizing,” Keahbone said. “What it needs is humility where we have been defensive, repentance where we have been careless, and grace toward those who have been hurt.”
The pastor said love requires caring about impact, not just intent.
“Whether the intent of the video was malicious or careless, the impact is real,” he said.
Keahbone concluded by referencing Psalm 139:14, which states that every person is fearfully and wonderfully made.
“May our words, our posts, and our actions reflect that truth,” he said.
