A group of 43 migrants, mostly minors, was rescued Friday from a small boat south of Crete, the Coast Guard said.
A Coast Guard statement said the 15 men and 28 minors were picked up by a Bahamas-flagged tanker some 31 nautical miles southeast of Kali Limenes on southern Crete. They were transferred to a Coast Guard vessel and taken to Crete.
The island has emerged as a key destination on a migrant smuggling route form Libya to Europe. More than 300 people have arrived there so far this year, according to United Nations data.
