This year’s women’s tournament is one of the most highly anticipated events in recent memory. Not only because of the excitement of the United States taking on Canada, but also because of the introduction of the Professional Women’s Hockey League, players from all around the globe are showing their talents nightly.
Sweden is entering the second half of a back-to-back, as they went up against the host nation, Italy, on Saturday. Though Italy tried to show some fight early in the game, Sweden’s depth proved to be too much. Sara Hjalmarsson and Thea Johansson’s multi-point efforts led to a 6-1 win for Damkronoma.
France’s chances of sneaking into the quarterfinals have been thwarted, barring a miracle. After a disappointing loss to Italy on the opening day of the tournament, the French came close to upsetting Japan last Friday, but ended up falling by a score of 3-2.
If France wants any chance of moving to the knockout stage, they would need to beat both Sweden and Germany, and get some help along the way.
