Unfortunately yes, older Cypriots are among the worlds best conspiracy theorists. If a leaf falls from a tree it’s because the Americans planned it for a profit, and our good Orthodox brothers over in Russia could never do anything wrong ever, even if they start the war and commit the war crimes it’s only because the Americans provoked our poor Orthodox brothers

Scientifically speaking there’s like 6 people being interviewed here. If this was a qualitative experiment then the sample size would be too small to conclude that ”this is representative of what Cypriots think”.
What they all said isn’t wrong or bad (doesn’t help that we dont get the full interviews but only snips of what each person says). None of them supported the invasion, none of them blamed Ukraine entirely. That Armenian man who said Ukraine shouldn’t look West and blah blah, he does have a point, its never good to blame just the one side because then you only get 50% of the story.
The Syrian girl speaks and thinks well, good for her.
I think you have to take in context. A lot of older people blame the US a lot for the invasion.
Also Cyprus has a big leftist/worker party population who are inherently anti US/capitalism/whatever it’s all the same to them.
Plus also historical “support” of Russia vis a vis the Cyprus problem which multiple governments took advantage of for domestic purposes even though it was bullshit.
Them also you have the fact nobody would sell us weapons except the Russians, so there’s that also.
In general, there was a very positive view of Russia for decades, but in the last 10-20 years it’s been decreasing (gradually) imho. At least from my experience.
The aggressor of this war is obviously Russia. But it is also a miscalculation by the Ukrainian leadership. Unfortunately we do not live in a world where each country is free to do what it wants.
For example we could also insist that it is our right to unite with Greece. We could refuse to accept British bases in Cyprus. We had the right to bring the S300 missiles in Cyprus. Greece has the right to expand its territorial waters to 12 miles in the Aegean.
The above are just examples were foreigners (NATO countries, not Russia in our case) prevented us from exercising our rights.
Russia isn’t any worst than other world powers like USA or China, or former world powers like the UK, or even regional powers like Turkey. They all threaten those who are weaker to force them to act in the way they want, and if they “disobey” they do not hesitate to use force to impose what they want.
This is the reality of our world, and this is how it has always been. There is nothing “unprecedent” in what Russia is doing today.
Cypriots know this very well due to our first hand experience with the aggression of NATO countries against us, so we do not buy NATO’s propaganda. This doesn’t mean Cypriots support Russia’s invasion.
Nato with so many illigal wars and the deaths of millions of women and children acting like the moral compass of the world makes me sick, russia in no good guy but nato is much much worse, nato supports all the dictatorships on the gl9be and thats a fact, not to mention condanamo bay that imprisons ppl that do not agree with them with no trials
if you understand geopolitics, you will find all the evil and darkness that wafts over the planet comes from that area known as the US and the western deep state
