U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth will speak at General Dynamics: Bath Iron Works Monday afternoon. This visit is part of the nationwide “Arsenal of Freedom” tour during which the secretary has emphasized that national security relies on the American workforce.A news release about the tour explains it is a “call to action to revitalize America’s manufacturing might and re-energize the nation’s workforce.” It goes on to say the tour will highlight an “urgent need” to rebuild the country’s defense industrial base in an effort to support a strength agenda outlined by Hegseth and President Donald Trump.Monday’s stop in Bath comes as GDBIW management hopes to earn a contract to build the “Trump class golden fleet warships,” which were first announced by Trump in December. They say they are ready to fully support the Navy with this new shipbuilding program.In December, Charles Krugh, president of GDBIW, wrote, “As a leading shipbuilder for the Navy for more than 140 years, GDBIW has the capacity, capability and engineering expertise to design and build the world’s best warships. America’s warfighters deserve the most advanced, lethal and survivable combat ships we can deliver to protect our country and our families.”Hegseth is expected to speak in Bath at 2 p.m. However, the Department of War said this tour is more than a series of speeches.”It is a movement to restore our nation’s industrial prowess and secure our freedom for generations to come. It is a reminder that the strength of our nation is not just in our military, but in the ingenuity and spirit of the American people,” the Department of War said.
