There’s no logical reason for cannabis to be illegal. If you don’t like it, don’t do it. Quit telling others what they can & can’t put in their own bodies.
Victimless crimes shouldn’t exist
If bacon sarnies were illegal he would be pm…
Good. Legalise it, tax it, make alot of money
This would actually be a really easy way for labour to gain a shit ton of votes without losing many since I imagine most anti weed people already vote Tory anyway.
It’ll always be amusing to me that the only people who actually want it to remain illegal are Mary Whitehouse-esque curtain twitching middle class middle aged parents, who tut into their Daily mails by day and (and heres the irony) quaff most of a bottle of a £10 supermarket red in the evenings.
Hopefully the passage of time will ease us into the sensible choice here.
Meanwhile. Tim Farron:
“Whatever Michael [Gove] had for breakfast this morning, I’m sure the Lib Dems are in favour of legalising it”.
stop the corruption and legalise this plant
Make it legal already. For fuck’s sake, money literally grows on trees when it comes to weed.
It’s our policies and cultural attitudes to issues like drugs that really expose the clash between the ostensibly progressive society we’ve evolved into and this weird, unshakable legacy of historical paternalism, aristocratic hypocrisy, and moral panic.
I live in Colorado now and marijuana is so normalized that I don’t really think about it, but it’s something of a case study for how little these things effect your life if you don’t want to be involved and the benefits of pragmatism – taxes, a booming industry, lower conviction rates, killing most of the unregulated black market (…).
It’s sadly just one instance of ideologically- or emotionally-driven policy fundamentally failing to reconcile with human nature or the reality of the world because of the obsession with the means rather than the ends.
Red Ed Redemption keeps chugging along
The science backs legalisation, but politicians do what gets them into power and what keeps them in power.
If there is any chance of it becoming legal, it would have to fall into those two categories.
All they need to do is look at Canada to see how easily it can work. So long as the don’t copy the government shop model they have in Ontario it’d be great.
Why isn’t this man labour leader again?
His biggest flaw was that he lacked confidence but now he’s gained a lot of confidence he comes across as a completely different person.
The one thing that his opposition put him down for is no longer a weakness. Most of the really cringey uncomfortable stuff he said he wears on his sleeve and will happily take the piss out of himself.
You could tell he wasn’t ready last time and was up against a slick Cameron. He’s ready now.
Not really open for Labour now when Starmer is against it. So hardly keeping it open but more just talking about something that won’t happen.
And if anything the article is more about him shutting it down than opening it up
Legalise it or don’t but know this – every single person in the UK who wants to smoke weed is doing just that, right now and the state is seeing absolutely none of that money.
I feel like the UK should make a small step and have it legal in cannabis cafes or something. Then move to full legalizing.
However I’m not an expert on this so I don’t know the ins and out.
Just a thought……cannabis use is very very widespread and is illegal and one of the arguments for non legalisation is that it is supposed to be a gateway drug but surely the only way people would be tempted into harder drugs through cannabis would be possibly when they go to buy their cannabis,So me being a genius suggest that the government regulate the production of cannabis and sell it via a network of ….maybe cafés which would create jobs for the cultivation and distribution of said cannabis and they would inevitably collect the vast amounts of tax that would be generated!
Also another argument is the possible mental health issues associated with cannabis consumption…..Again regulation could almost eradicate that issue.
There is scientific evidence to prove that compounds found in cannabis have some health benefits which could have more research put into.
I have never ever ever heard of anyone getting ‘stoned’ and going out for a fight which is definitely a problem with alcohol.
And does it not seem odd to say the least that a government would allow the sale of an item that is scientifically proven to kill users AND unwilling bystanders in the shape of cigarettes!!!!
Legalise it and have all taxes fund the NHS.
Whilst it’s logical to just legalise and tax it, Labour under no circumstances should campaign for it during an election, simply because the massive Tory base will hate it, and those uneducated will be swayed to vote blue because “labour wants to legalise drugs, drugs cause crime!”
It made me really lazy and unproductive, on the other hand my oldest friend smoked it for close to 20 years and became successful in what he does… different strokes
Ed > JC and KS
It should be legalised straight away, every location it has been legalised crime and psychosis stats have dropped. There is zero down side! … The only reason they won’t is because the police can pull over black people and foreigners for stop and search.
If smelling it on someone isn’t grounds for arrest anymore. Neither are peoples opinions on the smell. If it worrys people that much make it legal to smoke at home or in specific places just like smoking as there’s already the structure in place. Make it a policy that people can’t just smoke it walking around simple.
There are many cogent arguments regarding cannabis legalisation. Amongst my top reasons are.
Medically proven to help with many issues.
It cannot kill you. At all. Noone has died ever from smoking weed. People may have bad experiences but that’s because it’s illegal and noone has any mainstream knowledge of it. Beyond what they hear. The bad experience is basically a panic attack. If you are already prone to them it’s going to happen. Cannabis just enhances feeling.
The economic benefit to cannabis just pulling a random star out of the air in Washington the capitol of the US claimed over 7billion in tax on cannabis last year. The other side to the argument is that it takes the strain from drug enforcement. To help them shift focus to more damaging drugs like oh I don’t know Opioids aka medically processed heroine. Saving money on all those arrests with people having a couple gram and going to prison for longer than pedophiles. Again saving the strain on thr prison system. But I’ll stop talking about economic benefits as there are many.
Last of all Cannabis and hemp clean and scrub our air of more ppm (parts per million.) Of carbon monoxide, Per hectar. Than any other plant in the world. Recently there was a study that showed if you had the amazon rainforest space and filled it will cannabis it would help to clean the toxic partials from the air at a faster rate than the amazon.
It’s a good plant and you don’t stoned people going around smashing shit and putting strain on accident and emergency. But alcohol does. So my main point is. If alcohol is legal, so to should cannabis.
Tax revenue much like cigarettes and alcohol.
I’m guessing they saw the lack of public backlash from Sadiq taking a stand on the issue and some of the big beasts of the Labour Party are now coming out in support? Good, this is a massive vote winner and voter mobiliser. The polls are in on that✅
Good Camden boy that. Went to my school you know.
Bit of a shame he had to go and eat a bacon sandwich all weird. Might’ve been PM and Brexit wouldn’t of happened if he hadn’t.
Please make this man the next Labour leader starmer is just a nause and I want to be able to vote for a party that is somewhat close to my beliefs.
Fuck off.
You had your chance with Blair and Brown.
You moved it to class C only for it to be reclassified as class B.
Starmer has said he has no intention of changing drug policy either if he’s elected. There is no political momentum for it because most of the voters (old people) still view it the ‘devil’s lettuce’ and all smokers are worse than Hitler literally funding ISIS.
Please dear God somebody legalise it already, The fact we are still imprisoning people over this is sickening.
Sounds like Ed is under the impression that Starmer won’t be leading the next Labour government…
How is this still a question in this day and age? Complete waste of police time.
What’s up with Ed Miliband? He’s been in the news a few times lately, is he trying to get back into Labour’s leadership?
Please do. I’m so sick of being seen as a druggy because I smoke weed. When my friends can’t even walk home after a night out of drinking.
the first party that supports and pushes for the legalisation of weed gets my vote, i dont give a shit what other policies they have.
