Australian communications minister Anika Wells has called on Roblox maker Roblox Corp to explain how it is protecting children from adult content.

In a letter to the company, Wells outlined plans to test the child protection measures Roblox has implemented—which include mandatory age checks to limit conversations between adults and minors—and said she is “alarmed by reports of children being exposed to graphic and gratuitous user-generated content on the platform, including sexually explicit and suicidal material.”

“Even more disturbing are ongoing reports and concerns about children being approached and groomed by predators, who actively seek to exploit their curiosity and innocence,” she added.

As reported by The Guardian, Wells directly referenced media reports that allege children have been able to access adult-only spaces on Roblox. She also spotlighted charges raised against a Queensland resident, who is accused of grooming hundreds of minors on platforms like Roblox, Fortnite, and Snapchat.

Wells acknowledged that Roblox Corp has worked with Australian eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant to better protect children, but questioned the impact of those initiatives. “This is untenable, and these issues are of deep concern to many Australians parents and carers,” she continued.

The Labor Party minister has subsequently asked Grant whether any short-term measures should be taken to protect young Roblox users. She has also asked the Australian Classification Board to determine whether the PG rating handed to Roblox remains appropriate.

Roblox Corp continues to face scrutiny over perceived lack of child protections

The Australian eSafety office has also told Roblox Corp it plans to test how the platform’s child protection measures stack up. Those tests will determine whether the organization takes further action under the Online Safety Act.

Roblox is a colossal user-generated content platform with over 144 million daily active users (as of December 31, 2025).

In its most recent fiscal report, Roblox Corp revealed that 35 percent of age-checked players are under the age of 13—while 38 percent are aged between 13 and 17.

In that same report, Roblox Corp said it is working hard to become an “industry leader in safety” after bolstering its suite of parental controls and implementing other child safety measures.

Even so, the company has struggled to shake allegations that it has a systemic problem when it comes to protecting children from predators. Last year, a lawsuit filed against Roblox Corp by the State of Louisiana alleged the platform has become the “perfect place for pedophiles.”

The company was also sued by the State of Texas in November 2025 for allegedly building “digital playgrounds for predators.” In response, Roblox Corp said the litigation is based on “misrepresentations and sensationalized claims” and reiterated its commitment to keeping children safe online.
