SUTHERLAND—Prepare for loads of laughter with comedian Lisa Lane Filholm for a Galentine’s evening at the R.L. Johannsen Center in Sutherland.

The R.L. Johannsen Board is hosting its first Galentine’s Girl’s Night Out event Friday evening, Feb. 13.

“Just wanting to provide something for the community around Sutherland and Sutherland itself for something fun for the ladies to do,” said Jill Jurgensen, a member of the R.L. Johannsen board.

Tickets can be purchased via Venmo to the R.L. Johannsen Center, @Rljohannsen, with “Galentine’s” as the memo and a mention of how tickets were purchased. People can also buy tickets in-person at Keep Aim Boutique in Sutherland.

For $60 per ticket, women can enjoy a pasta buffet — “Every girls’ favorite meal,” according to the advertisement — and two drink tickets for alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. A cash bar will also be available.

“We have some fun Galentine’s-inspired cocktails mixed up,” Jurgensen said. “There’ll be some yummy hors d’oeuvres and appetizers.”

The doors to the event center will open at 6 p.m. and dinner will be served at 7.

The menu for the night includes pasta with a choice of marinara or alfredo sauce, and there is a choice of meatballs, shrimp or grilled chicken for protein. There will be sides of garlic toast and Caesar salad with toppings. Dessert is cheesecake with lots of topping options.

Filholm, a comedian from Denver, CO, will begin her entertainment 8 p.m. The event is recommended for women 21 and older due to the content of Filholm’s comedy.

“She focuses a lot on having children, marriages, all things funny that are women-related,” Jurgensen said.

According to Filholm’s website, beyondmamabear.com, the stand-up comedian is “an overeducated goofball.” She provides comedy shows for corporate and nonprofit events, as well as parenting groups. She works closely with the event organizers to provide comedy that fits the event’s setting.

Jurgensen contacted Filholm through e-mail, working through the logistics of getting the comedian to a N’West Iowa town 90 minutes away from the nearest airport.

“We were able to coordinate travel with her, and she was incredible to work with,” Jurgensen said. “She’s been really great about sending us promo videos and tagging us on Facebook.”

Filholm has a gig Wednesday, Feb. 11, in Sioux Falls, SD, at the Premiere Playhouse, a two-hour drive from the event center in Sutherland.

“She was so excited and easy to work with to get her here,” Jurgensen said.

Jurgensen also said people can expect a lot of “belly laughs,” which is one of Filholm’s taglines.

The R.L. Johannsen board is hoping to make the Galentine’s Girls’ Night Out an annual event, with different mediums of entertainment each year.

“We’re hoping that it will be such a well-attended event and that ladies really like it, that we can continue and do a Galentine’s every year with some different entertainment,” Jurgensen said.

More than 150 tickets have been purchased for the event.

“Chat, have some drinks, have a delicious dinner, and then just some much-needed laughs. Laughs for all the busy ladies, busy moms, busy wives,” Jurgensen said. “I hope you join us in Sutherland for a fun ladies’ night out.”
