Sēd uz sliekšņa pasaciņa(1987)
Music is very dreamy, but animation is bizarre…

  1. Many of the Latvian animations I remember from my childhood (25-30 years ago) felt very “dreamy” and trippy. Some were even uncomfortable to watch. Some that come to mind – “Ness un nessija”, “Fantadroms” (this one was especially trippy)

  2. 80s/90s animations now all seem soooo strange.

You can check out also Zaķīšu pirtiņa.

from my childhood, i remember and liked much more Si-si-dra, Izmeklētājs Caps series, and Avārijas brigāde series- those are not animated, but instead puppet series.

  3. Can’t forget about “Dillī Dallī” It’s odd how such a blatant middle finger to the system even got made back then

  4. Ekstrēmi mans ievārījums. Sēd uz sliekšņa pasaciņa still makes me sentimental after all these years.

    In no particular order:

    – Skatāmpanti – Same or trippier vibe as Sēd uz sliekšņa pasaciņa and Fantadroms. Could be scary for younger kids or for adults with increased THC content. Not easy to find online. Very mid to late 1980s (use of synths, national symbols in imagery).
    – Uzpasaka – Somehow both bland and creepy.
    – Zaļā Pasaka – 1970s environmentalism and weird sound.
    – Zelta Sietiņš/Mākonīts un Mākonīte/Saule un mēness (3 animations, usually in one video from 1975) – Rainis, Imants Kalniņš, directed by Roze Stiebra and designs by 1970s artists, including Miervaldis Polis.
    – Laimes Lācis – Synths, voice by Olga Rajecka and 1980s animation at it’s best.

I will mention more when I remember them.

  5. I’m more than surprised that nobody has mentioned Kaķīša Dzirnavas (The Cat’s Mill) because many somewhat traditional scenes are merged together with some really trippy af scenes. You should definitely watch it!

  6. Saule brauca debesīs is a recent one which made me weep at the end. Really beautiful and the music is good.

Latvian animation is mostly really artsy and dreamy.

  7. I don’t know if it is just may Latvian upbringing kicking in or is it the actual meaning of the poem, but Sēž uz sliekšņa pasaciņa had quite sad undertone – Fairy tale rides and rides, and doesn’t stop, on the face of earth there is no home for her. There are no fairytales on earth.

  8. I think it is supposed to be a dream vaguely connected to poetry thet turns into a nightmare for a bit

The director of this is Roze Stiebra I saw a short interview with her about this like a month ago and IIRC she said she made a few cartoons based on poems and had the composer write music for them specifically, from timeline of her works I guess others where Uzpasaka and Skaitāmpanti
