I had the same “discussion” not too long ago probably the height of COVID vaccunes or there abouts. Pretty friendly with a woman on my old team she lives in Texas and is originally from Florida. I always knew she was a republican by comments she made, that sort of thing.
She rang me one day saying herself and her husband wanted to visit Ireland once the pandemic was over and wanted tips on where to go etc. We eventually got onto masks and vaccines and she said “well you know, you’re a republican” I don’t know how but as a reflex I said “not your kind of republican “…..she doesn’t ring me as much anymore.
It’s easy.
Our Republicans gave up their guns and are socialists.
Their lot, not so much.
Killing kids … Killing Brits …
Now you can choose between a mass shooting in an Elementary school or a bombing in a playground.
But can you blame them? You can see it nearly every time the Us has an election cycle, it’s as if EU outlets report the US election better than those that actually impact us. Even this shooting news will probably get more coverage than a more relevant issue to us.
UP THE RA. !!
Sometimes, especially when emotions are running high, Americans like to misunderstand things intentionally.
At least there’s that Democrat Party up in Northern Ireland.
“Irish Americans” tend to be American republicans, at least in the northeast. The Don’t even bother to learn about what Irish republicans are. (I’m an American and really only learned about your 800 year war a few years ago).
Being conservative and being a member of the new Trumpism movement are two very different things. A lot of Americans are blind to it.
I don’t think it is called Republicanism in the US. People are members of the Republican Party which has nothing to do with the concept of Republicanism.
Can you please tell me the story of the misunderstanding?
Nationalism was just like Ireland over here in Turkey then the far-right have reclaimed it in the ’60s. Our version SF still claims to be nationalist but the public just say “fuck off you are not xd”
That seems worse. Like, it’s bad if you’re a racist, but it’s worse if you start beating those races to death.
Most Republicans I know say stuff like “up the IRA”
Checks notes on IRA history. Uhhhh about that…
Most US liberals are basicically moderates in other countries. If labeled by US conservatives, anyone that doesn’t believe the bible is a history book is a liberal.
Thing is both of those tend to be closer in their belief system than most people think. Especially the governing yourself and wanting smaller more local governance.
I just get hella hate for supporting Irish Republicanism here in America.
Nah, Republican nationalism in ireland very often dips its Irish supremacy and racism. It’s why the “alt right” in ireland are mostly SF voters.
