Hello,
I am planning to start a large bonfire from wooden pallets at night [for example](https://thumbs.dreamstime.com/z/bonfire-wood-pallets-images-taken-large-warm-made-out-pallet-fire-festival-chester-county-pa-47874793.jpg). I’m just wondering if this is legal or if I would get in trouble with Latvian authorities for this?

From what I’ve read, it is fine as long as it is not in a forest and as long as it isn’t unattended, I plan to just do it on the beach.

  1. You can’t have a bonfire on the beach/dune area unless there is a dedicated place for it. Bonfires are regulated via each municipality regulation (for public spaces) and/or the beach/dune area is regulated by law due to being a protected zone.

  2. It is prohibited as long as it is not Midsummer celebration (not legally prohibited, but there is no force on earth that will enforce the prohibition – USSR tried it and failed). But even then, it is generally frowned upon to create huge ass bone fires without any control.

  3. Definitely illegal at the beach. All our seaside is a protected zone (“kāpu zona”) prohibiting many things. Unauthorised bonfires are among those things.

  4. Typically, if you want to make something larger than a campfire, you should consult your nearest fire department. They should know both what’s allowed and also whether you need a professional on site to keep an eye on you.
