WACO, Texas (KWTX) – Dozens of Texas lawmakers are calling on Attorney General Ken Paxton to launch an investigation into Elon Musk’s social platform ‘X’ and its AI software ‘Grok’, as they say nude images of women and children are being generated there every minute of every day.
They filed that letter to his office weeks ago and have yet to hear back.
Democratic state representative Mihaela Plesa, (D)-Plano, is leading the effort, calling on AG Ken Paxton to hold Elon Musk accountable for what happens on his platform.
“Jurisdictions all over the country and all over the world are opening investigations and actively writing letters to Elon Musk to put a check on this and that’s all we’re asking the Attorney General to do,” Plesa tells KWTX.
Texas has some of the toughest laws in the nation when it comes to AI and social media, especially when minors are involved. But Plesa says despite those laws, her office has seen no movement from the Attorney General.
THE CONCERN
“You have millions of sexualized images generated in just a number of days and this includes tens of children,” Plesa says.
The concern is shared by Central Texas advocate, Dawn Wible, the founder of Talk More. Tech Less. Wible was recently on Capitol Hill pushing for the passage of the ‘Take It Down Act’, legislation designed to crack down on explicit content, including AI generated images.
“It requires platforms to take down any content that is explicit images and that includes generative AI and it criminalizes that kind of content,” she explained.
With recent reports alleging Grok has been used to create nude images of women and children, both Wible and Plesa say the timing of the law couldn’t be more critical.
“To see the Grok news coming out of them undressing women and children we are glad that the AG’s can use this to prosecute because that’s what we kept saying that we needed to pass this quickly because AI was going to move fast,” Wible explained.
GAINING SUPPORT
While Plesa says this isn’t a partisan issue, her letter hasn’t gained bipartisan support. She told KWTX that more than 40 Democratic lawmakers have attached their name to the letter, but not one Republican state leader has.
“We know that 35-36 Attorney Generals across the country have also asked for investigations. Attorney General Ken Paxton paints himself as a family first lawmaker. He talks about faith and family and he talks about protecting our children but yet at this instance, with this specific platform, he has been very slow to act,” she says.
Weeks after the letter was sent, Plesa says her office still hasn’t heard back.
KWTX also reached out to Paxton’s office to ask about the letter and to see if they are looking into the issue, we did not hear back before deadline.
