My husband and I are in Bern at the moment and have been loving it!! We came across these lively gentlemen playing this game (none of whom spoke English and my German is rough at best… so little communication) and we are trying to figure out what it is?!? They were having a blast and we want to learn more. Help! (Pic in comments as I can’t figure out how to do text and photo in a post…)
> The game is also known as nine-man morris, mill, mills, the mill game, merels, merrills, merelles, marelles, morelles, and ninepenny marl in English.
Muhle
My grandma always destroyed me in this game
Charret
Jeu du moulin ou charret
Mühle
9 man’s Morris. I first learned this game on Uligan in Maldives, where the locals call it “Ting Hamat”
The person playing white is winning the game in the photo. When you line up three of your pieces in any row, you get to remove one of opponent’s pieces (your choice).
Play is simple, turn by turn, including initial placement of 9 pieces each, on the simple board which can be set up and created with a piece of paper and pen. Markers can be anything from sticks and pebbles to coin or hand crafted tokens.
The most OP thing in this game is called “figgi müli”.

Classic „Mühle“ 🙂 A bit googling and I found out it‘s called „Nine men‘s Morris“ in english. See here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nine_men%27s_morris
In German it’s called “Mühle” which translates to mill.
According to Wikipedia the English name is apparantly [Nine men’s morris](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nine_men%27s_morris?wprov=sfla1).
