Turks have no claim on those islands, Greeks have been living there and building the culture there for over 5,000 years. The dodekanese are a jewel of Greek architecture and aesthetics. Turks controlled most of these islands for less than 100-200 years as many islands held resistance well into the late 1500’s. European peace with Turkey is based on the fact of no territorial expansion into Greece or rest of balkans.
This map should be a very good guideline of what our fellow Europeans in Sweden and Finland should expect when discussing with Turkey about supposed issues.
The Turkish word for Greek is “Yunan”, another pronunciation of” Ionian”. Greece is “Yunanistan”.
Ionia is the west coast of what is now Turkey. It has been referred to more recently as West Anatolia, which is a bit silly since Anatolia is Greek for the East.
The current claim is that Ionia doesn’t belong to the Ionians.
The biggest reason Turkey wants those islands is because of EEZ anyways. Land means nothing when the ocean is now everything which Greece hit the jackpot with.
